General Questions

  • What is a visa? And why do I need one?

    • A visa is a stamp that is affixed to a blank visa page in one's passport. The visa is required by some foreign countries before one is able to enter their territory.

  • Do I need to submit my passport to receive a visa?

    • Yes, one's passport must be submitted with the required paperwork and a current passport photo (no glasses) in order to obtain a visa for traveling to Ghana.

  • How long does it take to process an application for a visa?

    • A RUSH visa will be processed the same day or while one waits (if all requirements are met) during business hours. One should allow 10 business days from the date received for a NON-RUSH visa to be processed.

  • If I make a mistake on my application, what will happen?

    • PLEASE include a cell phone number so that we can call you if there are questions. "IF" one has put a cell phone number in the appropriate space, the Houston office will call with any questions or problems. If one puts an email at the bottom of the page, Houston will send an email. If there is no response to these inquiries, the paperwork will be returned to the sender on the third day.

  • Where can I find when my visa or passport expires?

    • On your visa, look above and to the right of the signature and you will see the date of issue. A single visa is good for one time only and expires 3 months from date-of-issue. A multiple visa will expire either 36 months or 60 months from date-of-issue. The date of the passport's expiration is at the top of the visa and on the picture page of the passport.

Visa and Consulate Specific Questions

  • What is the difference between a RUSH and a NON-RUSH visa?

    • The difference between the visas is the amount of time it takes to process. A NON-RUSH visa takes 10 business days (2 weeks) to process from the date received. In Houston, the RUSH visa is processed and sent back the same business day it is received (Monday through Thursday). If you bring your completed application in to the office, it will be processed in about 15 minutes.

    • If one is requesting a non-rush visa, make the money order out to the Ghana Embassy for either $60 or $100. • Do you have any suggestions for a large group submitting applications together?

    1. Please fill out all the "in common" (date of travel, contacts in Ghana, etc...) blanks before giving the application to travelers allowing the applicant to more easily complete the application.
    2. Place each individual’s required documents (application with picture, passport, itinerary, and checks) in a separate envelope with his/her name on the front.
    3. Please provide an alphabetical list of your group.
    4. One may combine the fees into 2 money orders, one for the Ghana Embassy and one for Diane Webb
    5. Please call 713-960-1950 if you need further clarification. One may ship all of the applications in one package and use only one prepaid return package as well.

  • Where do I send my completed applications?

    • Send via USPS EXPRESS OR OVERNIGHT ENVELOPE, UPS, or FedEx, signature waived to:

      CONSULATE OF GHANA
      3535 Westheimer Road, Suite #235
      Houston, Texas 77027

Include a SELF-ADDRESSED, PREPAID, SIGNATURE WAIVED, TRACKABLE RETURN ENVELOPE.
One's visa and passport will be placed in this return envelope.

  • What is "signature waived?"

    • If one waives one's signature, the postman, FedEx, or UPS can leave it at the office in our secure slot without needing our signature. If one does not waive the signature, it might delay the arrival of one's package. It can force us to have to go to the post office to pick it up. UPS or FedEx will take the package back to their center and try to deliver it 3 times. If not successful, the company will return it to the sender.

  • Why do you want me to send my package express or overnight mail?

    • It is important that one get one's passport and visa back as soon and as safely, as possible. Express and Overnight packages allow tracking, and other services not offered on lower classes of mail. To ensure that you get the best service, we recommend overnight or express shipping. DO NOT USE A REGULAR ENVELOPE WITH A 49 CENT STAMP!

It is important that one keep the tracking numbers for both envelopes so that the package can be easily tracked.
